Contribution to ESG indicators:

• accessibility of community fund documents.

In order to support JLEN’s stated objective of developing positive relationships with the communities in which JLEN operates, this year a number of changes have been made to increase the availability of information online and to make it easier for communities to contact the asset managers to address questions or concerns. So far, JLEN’s AD portfolio now has a series of project websites that local communities can view to see more about the project itself as well as contact details and information on available community funding.

Next steps

JLEN is working to ensure that each project has an online presence to help it connect with the local community. JLEN intends to host information about each of these projects centrally through its own website, making it easier for communities to access grievance procedures, contact the asset managers and apply for community funding for local projects.

TRAINING TO UPSKILL

Training to upskill operatives at the ELWA waste processing plant

4,000 hours of training

In the financial year just passed, the ELWA waste plant, which provides more than 190 full time equivalent jobs across its plants, has provided over 4,000 hours of training. This included a wide range of training from the management team through to operators and maintenance teams. It also included both new starter inductions and refresher training along with training provided to upskill operatives and the management team and/or train operators/maintenance teams on new equipment that has been installed.

This programme of training helps to keep ELWA’s workforce skilled in the various areas of the business and also helps to prevent health and safety and environmental incidents from occurring.

SUPPORTING BIODIVERSITY

Community fund that is supporting biodiversity

£7,500

Egmere AD plant in North Norfolk contributes an annual sum of £7,500 to its community benefit fund which is disbursed to a range of different local projects. This year, one of the projects that Egmere has contributed to is the North West Norfolk Ringing Group (“NWNRG”) which supports the British Trust for Ornithology (“BTO”), to undertake original ornithological research projects and contribute to the national bird ringing scheme.

Recently, barn owls have been at the forefront of the group’s conservation work. To monitor numbers, the NWNRG tag any young owlets with leg rings issued by the BTO.

The NWNRG and Holkham estate donated a barn owl box to Egmere Energy (pictured below). Previously, the owl box at Egmere has been inhabited and it is hoped that now the box has been redesigned it will become another barn owl home very soon.

Llynfi Afan Renewable Energy Park

Llynfi Afan Renewable Energy Park

c.£96,000 per annum

The Llynfi Afan Renewable Energy Park is located on Mynydd y Gelli near Abergwynfi in Neath Port Talbot and Blaengarw in Bridgend, South Wales, and has been operational since 2017. It consists of 12 turbines with a total capacity of 24MW and produces enough electricity to power the equivalent of over 14,000 homes. Throughout the life of the wind farm, approximately £96,000 per year is being made available to the local community to support projects that provide academic, cultural, economic, environmental, recreational or social benefit locally.  In the 2018/19 year, the Llynfi Afan Community Fund Steering Group approved applications for almost £100,000 of funding from projects.
