SFDR

Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation

JLEN is considered to be an Article 9 product for the purposes of the EU Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (“SFDR”). The Company has a climate change mitigation objective and supports the transition to a low carbon economy by virtue of investing in a diversified portfolio of environmental infrastructure, which JLEN defines as infrastructure assets, projects and asset-backed businesses that utilise natural or waste resources or support more environmentally friendly approaches to economic activity, support the transition to a low carbon economy or which mitigate the effects of climate change.

TCFD

Aligning with the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures

In considering the TCFD recommendations, JLEN is largely driven by organisation-level strategic approaches taken by Foresight. It is important, however, to consider how those approaches apply at the Fund level.  JLEN’s approach to TCFD reporting requirements can be found in the Sustainability and ESG Report.

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

Mapping JLEN’s portfolio against the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (“SDGs”) are a set of 17 goals for sustainable development.

To be achieved by 2030, they recognise that ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with strategies that build economic growth and address a range of social needs including education, health, social protection and job opportunities, while tackling climate change and environmental protection. JLEN has mapped its portfolio against the SDGs and the results of this analysis is set out in the Sustainability and ESG Report.

CASE STUDY

SOIL RESILIENCE
AND PROTECTION

Key environmental criteria:

  • commitment to energy management;
  • climate change resilience; and
  • management of natural resources.

Liquid digestate is a by-product from the anaerobic digestion process and can be used as an organic fertiliser in farming. Digestate from our AD plants is sold to local farmers as an organic fertiliser.

Our partners, Future Biogas, have been part of a trial study investigating the effect of liquid digestate on soil quality in Norfolk. The three-year study was undertaken between 2016 and 2018 and involved regular application of liquid digestate as a fertiliser to trial fields. The results of the study have shown that use of liquid digestate results in:

  • increased availability of nutrients in the soil;
  • reduced need for inorganic fertiliser;
  • increased soil health through increased micro biological soil life;
  • increased resilience to drought due to increased organic matter, which holds water effectively; and
  • improved yields.

All of this resulted in increased financial benefit to the farmer.
